The Taos Palms Apartments are located off Las Palmas Avenue.
The Palm Desert Housing Authority on Wednesday unanimously approved a construction contract with Van Engineering Inc. to address ongoing flooding problems at the Taos Palms apartment complex at 44830 Las Palmas Ave.
The project, which will cost $240,000, will be fully reimbursed through federal Community Development Block Grant funds from HUD. The Palm Desert City Council last month voted to reallocate CDBG funds to address a documented flooding and drainage problem.
"Taos Palms apartments has experienced ongoing flooding during rain events which has directly impacted our residents there," Alex Vasquez, with the city’s capital projects department told commissioners. "Therefore, the property has been identified at the high priority rehabilitation site to address the ongoing flooding."
The site improvements will include demolishing and replacing existing asphalt, sidewalks, landscaping and drainage systems, with modifications to grading and drainage throughout the courtyards and parking areas.
Van Engineering Inc. submitted the lowest, most responsible bid for the project, according to a staff report prepared for the meeting.
In addition to addressing the flooding issues, the project will correct ADA deficiencies at the site to enhance accessibility and overall conditions for residents.
